As most of the people, I was also believing that updating virus definitions without direct internet connection to the computer isn’t possible at all. But I was wrong…

Let me first introduce the importance of the Updating Antivirus Software. One day I got two kind of viruses from a Cybercafé through my USB pen-drive in my computer. Due to that virus, I was unable to install any new program or even see the task manager. I could not also scan my computer due to virus effect. Anyhow, (using safe-mode with command-prompt) I managed to scan my computer with Avast antivirus. But the scan result was clean. I formatted my computer, but surprisingly, that could not remove those viruses (Because those viruses were jumping from one partition to another). What next then I could do? One thing I understood was that the viruses were new and I must have an updated virus definition with my antivirus software. After searching many Q & A on the web, I came to know that some antivirus providers provide virus definitions for download.

So, I checked www.avast.com (because it was Avast antivirus software) and downloaded the “update”. After installing that file, my antivirus was updated having the latest virus definitions. And so, after starting the scanning, it detected and successfully removed all viruses from my computer.

In conclusion, before having any free antivirus on your computer (Especially not having internet connection), first check that the maker of antivirus software provide virus definitions for downloading or not. Note that, if you have internet connection on your computer, you don’t have to worry about updates, because your antivirus software usually updates itself automatically.
