If you are an owner of a good site having medium or high PageRank, you might have put some sponsored links pointing to other sites. This can be dangerous for your site, especially when the linked sites are not relevant (in subject) to your site.

What is the danger part in this? Have a look at this post, written on David Airey. He is not involved in SEO or other such things, but he came across them closely when he made a little mistake. He had put one irrelevant link to other sponsor site and another link (irrelevant, of course) was put by Text Link Ads (TLA). The way he was suffered from this two links can be read on his post mentioned above.

Now, it’s time for a blogger. If you are blogging for money or fame, you must have registered at Technorati. Technorati gives the registered blogs a particular rank. Lower is the rank, lower is the popularity. This rank is assigned considering a number of factors including Authority. Authority means number of inbound links a specific blog have, from other blogs which are registered at Technorati. So, to gain the popularity of your blog, you have to have more and more authority.

Now, what if two bloggers exchange their own link in each other’s blogroll? Evidently, both of them will get 1-1 authority. So, a blogger can just meet other bloggers to exchange links and can easily gain Technorati rank. But, Google is cleverer. It can detect such activities and can punish such blogs, by decreasing their PageRank (if they have it at all) and lowering the position in Google’s search results. This is what the black-Hat SEOing can give you.

So, in conclusion, don’t put any irrelevant links on your site or blog. Also, don’t exchange each other’s links in blogroll to gain Technorati rank; if you love PageRank and traffic from Google.
